Dear Colleagues,
I would like to thank everyone who joined us for the American Heart Association Heart Walk last month. Your enthusiasm and support embody our shared commitment to advancing heart health in our community. The Walk remains one of the AHA’s most impactful fundraising events each year, helping to drive critical research and education initiatives that benefit patients everywhere.
Our Heart Center team registered 50 walkers and raised nearly $2,500 in this year’s event, an outstanding effort that reflects our mission beyond the walls of the clinic and laboratory. The AHA has long been a valued partner to both Baylor College of Medicine and The Texas Heart Institute, and we remain deeply committed to supporting their programs that advance cardiovascular science and awareness.
Looking ahead, the AHA Scientific Sessions will take place November 7–10 in New Orleans. Members of our Heart Center will be well represented, presenting 25 papers and invited talks highlighting our leadership in cardiovascular discovery and innovation.
We are also proud to celebrate Dr. Christie Ballantyne, recipient of the 2025 AHA Distinguished Scientist Award—one of the organization’s highest honors. Dr. Ballantyne, who joined the Division of Cardiology at Baylor in 1985, has made groundbreaking contributions to the understanding of atherosclerosis and lipoprotein biology. His work, supported by continuous NIH funding since 1988, spans from fundamental discoveries in vascular inflammation to landmark clinical trials in cardiovascular prevention. Recognized among Thomson Reuters’ “World’s Most Influential Scientific Minds,” Dr. Ballantyne’s impact on the field has been extraordinary.
Please join me in congratulating Dr. Ballantyne on this well-deserved recognition and in thanking all who continue to advance our mission of improving cardiovascular health through discovery and compassion.

Director, The Texas Heart Institute at Baylor College of Medicine Cardiovascular Center

Dear Texas Health Network Providers,
This email is to inform you of a policy change regarding Board Certification. In January 2025, the grandfather clause, which allowed physicians to practice without board certification, was repealed as part of a chapter-wide reorganization. Please note that the Texas Medical Board (TMB) no longer issues grandfather lifetime clauses.
As a result of this change, all physicians are now required to be board-certified. The Texas Clinically Integrated Network approved on June 15, 2025, that all providers who are not currently board-certified will have until December 31, 2027, to obtain board certification. Failure to obtain board certification by this date will result in termination from the Texas Clinically Integrated Network.
If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to reach out.
Regards,
Megan Harkey, MHA
