February is American Heart Month
As we recognize American Heart Month, I want to thank each of you for the work you do every day to advance cardiovascular health for our patients and our community. Your dedication across clinical care, research, education, and support services directly improves lives and reflects the mission and legacy of The Texas Heart Institute at Baylor College of Medicine.
This month is also an important opportunity to raise awareness about prevention and the impact of heart disease, which remains the leading cause of death in the United States. Together, we play a critical role not only in treating heart disease, but in educating our patients and the public about risk factors, early detection, and healthier lifestyles.
As part of Heart Month, I invite you to join us for Wear Red Day on Friday, February 6, in support of women’s cardiovascular health. Please wear your red and participate in our annual group photo at 1:00 PM following Cardiology Grand Rounds in the lobby of the Denton A. Cooley Auditorium to show our support. Thank you for all you do to champion heart health and for the compassion and excellence you bring to our community every day.

Honoring a Legacy of Innovation
This month, we announced that William E. “Billy” Cohn, MD, Professor of Surgery at Baylor College of Medicine and Executive Director of the Center for Device Innovation at the Texas Medical Center, has been selected as the recipient of the 2026 Ray C. Fish Award for Scientific Achievement. The award was presented during a ceremony on January 9, 2026, in the historic Ansary Atrium at The Texas Heart Institute at Baylor College of Medicine.
Update From The Heart Institute of the Ministry of Health of Ukraine
Last year, we had the honor of welcoming a delegation from the Heart Institute of the Ministry of Health of Ukraine, led by Dr. Borys Todurov. The team shared their incredible efforts in the face of an ongoing war, of how they managed to continue to save lives and advance cardiovascular care under extraordinary circumstances. Their resilience and dedication to patient care are nothing short of inspiring.
This week, Dr. Todurov wrote to share an update that is both humbling and extraordinary. As the war continues in Ukraine, his team performed 63 successful heart transplants in 2025, including eight in children. With no air navigation available, donor hearts have been transported entirely by ground—often during active drone, cruise missile, and ballistic missile attacks. Some of these lifesaving journeys have spanned more than 600 kilometers, with ischemic times exceeding seven hours. Despite these unimaginable conditions, not a single patient has been lost.
Dr. Todurov shared that Kyiv is currently experiencing widespread blackouts, and his hospital is operating without external electricity or heating. Even so, their team recently completed the first heart transplant of the year in a city just 20 kilometers from the front line.
He credited the success of his program to the training, mentorship, and collaboration fostered through our institutions, an extraordinary reminder that the impact of our work reaches far beyond our walls. Their story is a testament to what is possible when medicine is driven by courage, purpose, and unwavering commitment to human life.
